LET'S GO BIRDING TOGETHER!
April
Join LCQB for our first Green Island birding adventure of the season—just in time for migration and nesting season!
We’ll get an early start in hopes of seeing a Great Horned Owl, and take a peep at last year’s Osprey nest before following the North Loop Trail, a mostly flat ~1.25 mile route over a loose gravel and packed dirt path. With the McKenzie and Willamette rivers converging here, Green Island is one of the least altered wildlife habitats in the Willamette Valley. There’s a lot happening this time of year: native plants are blooming, Yellow Warblers and several species of Sparrows are returning for the season, and large flocks of Tree Swallows take to the sky. If we’re lucky, we’ll see a few Swifts!
What to know:
- No pets, please. Green Island is an active conservation site, and domestic animals are prohibited.
- There is no potable water on-site. Bring enough water to stay hydrated.
- A port-a-potty will be available, but there are no other facilities.
- Green Island borders public lands where seasonal hunting may occur. You might hear gunshots, but hunting is strictly prohibited at Green Island.
- Drive under 10 MPH on Green Island Road to help us be good neighbors to nearby residents.
Bring binoculars if you have ‘em, and dress for the weather. We’ll cross our fingers that we’ll miss the rain, but we bird rain or shine!
